2015 Connecticut Invitational Competition

Every two years the Connecticut Association of Photographers holds a competition among camera clubs in Connecticut. This year there were 14 clubs competing. Each club could enter twelve images. This year's competition was judged by members of the Westchester Camera Club.

Congratulations to the winners! The first place club was Flagpole Photographers with a score of 297, and in second place was the New Haven Camera Club with 294 points. Below are the full club results.

FREE Parish Kohanim Persentation

We don't normally include information on the CAP blog about events sponsored by other organizations. However, there is a FREE photography lecture coming up next Monday evening that we highly recommend to our members that will help expand your creativity and teach you a few new techniques.

On Monday evening, November 16th from 7 to 9 p.m. Parish Kohanim, a Canon explorer of Light, will take a journey through his diverse and striking body of work. He will share his passion about the art of photography and inspire you with a focus on finding the beauty that surrounds us. If you want to expand your personal horizons this is a do not miss presentation.

The lecture will be held at the Cromwell Crowne Plaza, 100 Berlin Road, Cromwell, CT  06416 just off I 91.  Click for a map showing the location.

CAP Field Trip to Stockbridge, MA

CAP is planning a field trip to the quaint town that inspired Norman Rockwell's classic Christmas paintings. The trip will include the Norman Rockwell Museum. You will be able to tour historic houses, properties, and inns such as the Campbell House, the Rectory, Naumkeag, Tanglewood, and Windermere Manor. (This is a self guided tour where we can proceed at our own pace.) Also there will be Caroling, a Luminary Walk (possibly), and festive decorations in town. The Red Lion Inn with Roaring Fireplace, Harp and Piano Entertainment, and Gift Shop is also there.

COST : One flat rate of $20.00 allows access to all buildings. For those who choose not tour the Inns, Houses, and Manors there is no cost, but you are on your own during that time.

Less then 10 Days to Register for DesRochers Seminar

You have only 10 days left to register for the David DesRochers Seminar to be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, in Hamden, CT. The seminar is entitled Creating Unique Images of Our Natural World. This seminar will provide education, information, and inspiration for any level photographer in today's digital photographic world. The seminar will include something for every level of photographer including lunch.

Topics to be presented include:
  1. The Starting Line: Basics of Photography, including equipment and photographic concepts such as shutter speed, f/stops, exposure, depth of field – and how all can be used to take good photographs and achieve different effects. Although the focus will be on nature photography, these same principles will be applied to other kinds of photography as well.
  2. Creating Photos with Impact. Most people take snapshots. Photographers create works of art. Elements of composition will be explored, allowing its use to create compelling photographs. Subjects will include portraits, street and travel, architecture and nature.
  3. Wild about Wildlife. David’s techniques used to photograph birds and animals in the field will be explored. Subjects will include light (natural and flash), composition and moment. Ethics, animal/bird behavior and popular wildlife destinations will also be covered.
  4. Creative Landscapes: David will share his techniques for finding and capturing unique mages of the endless natural art our planet has to offer. Subjects include planning, composition, capture and post processing. Techniques used to create panoramas, blurs and “art in water” images will also be covered.

Buttonwood Farm CAP Field Trip

By popular demand The Connecticut Association of Photographers is running yet another trip to the sunflowers! On Saturday, July 25, 2015, we will visit Buttonwood Farm, 473 Shetucket Turnpike, Griswold, CT. Come join us for a morning shoot on 15 acres of sunflowers giving you over 450,00 blooms to choose from when selecting just the right specimen to photograph.

You can take a tractor drawn hayride starting at 11am. which takes you through the cow pastures and 4 acres of sunflower fields. The cost is $5.00. All proceeds go to the Make - A - Wish Foundation described below.

The Make - A - Wish Foundation will be on site selling $5.00 bouquets of sunflowers as well as sunflower themed T shirts and notecards to raise money for local children battling life threatening medical conditions. This is a wonderful fund raiser.

And let's not forget the REAL reason why so many want to come back to Buttonwood.....Ice Cream! This will be the best homemade ice cream that you will ever eat. Choose from over 30 flavors of ice cream. They even have sunflower ice cream! The shop opens at noon.

Narraganset/Newport Bay Boat Tour

Enjoy a day in Rhode Island with fellow CAP members on a 90 minute narrated cruise aboard the Ava Pearl. This is a three year old catamaran which holds 150 passengers with two viewing levels, outside sun deck seating, two clean restrooms, climate controlled interior seating, and a full service bar/galley with light fare. It is the newest, most luxurious sightseeing catamaran in the United States today.

CAP members will have an opportunity to view ten lighthouses: Popular Point, Plum Beach, Dutch Island, Whale Rock, Beavertail, Castle Hill, Lime Rock, Goat Island, Rose Island, and Conanicut. There will be ten different islands: Goat, Rose, Coasters, Gould, Hope, and Prudence covering over 60 miles of RI coastline. Other picturesque sights will include: Jamestown Bridge, Castle Hill Newport, Hammersmith Farm, Newport, Ocean Cliff, Newport, Clingstone "House On The Rock", Jamestown, Fort Adams, Newport, Newport Harbor, Newport Pell Bridge, and sailboats galore. After the cruise we will proceed to Newport, Rhode Island, for more photo ops, touring, shopping, and a sunset (we hope).

Reminder, Tops in Connecticut Show and Dinner Coming Soon

FINAL REMINDER: Courtesy Enrollment for a CAP Member to Attend the 2015 NECCC Summer Conference

Every year NECCC allows each member club to select one member to attend the next NECCC Summer Conference with a free registration fee. CAP is a member of NECCC allowing us to select one of our members to receive this complementary registration fee. The important requirements to be selected are:

  • The person selected must be a member of CAP with his/her dues paid.
  • The person selected must be as least 18 years old as of July 1, 2015.
  • The person selected must have never attended the NECCC Summer Conference.

Approximately one month ago we sent out a blog posting to the membership that this opportunity was available. So far no one has applied! Now we are at the deadline. Any CAP member who is interested in being considered for this courtesy enrollment should contact Antoinette Gombeda (agombeda@optonline.net) today. Send Antoinette your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. If more than one person is interested, Antoinette will select the recipient by drawing a name from a hat.

Remember, you must send your name and information to Antoinette Gombeda. She will take care of sending the required information to NECCC by the March 15, 2015, deadline. Also, remember that the courtesy enrollment is only for the registration fee; the lucky CAP member will still be responsible for his/her own transportation, housing, and meal expenses.

CAP Members Score in Greater Lynn International Exhibition

Members of the Connecticut Association of Photographers who entered the Greater Lynn International Salon did very well. As a club CAP scored second with 342 points compared to 343 points for the Merrimack Valley Camera Club. The third place club was Gateway Camera Club with 333 points. The club score is the sum of the scores received by the 7 highest scoring photographers who entered from the club. Twenty eight clubs competed for the club award including many from outside the United States such as China, Iran, Australia, England, Denmark, Wales, Japan, and India. CAP will receive a $200 prize for its second place finish.

Four members of the club won special awards in the competition:

  • Catherine Thiem won an Honor Award; 
  • Tom Cuchara won an Honor Award;
  • Matthew Collen won the Best Child Medal; and 
  • Lisa Cuchara won the Best Still Life Medal and an Honor Award.

Congratulations to our members who won these special awards.

All CAP members are urged to see the outstanding show of the award wining and accepted images when it is presented. The show will be presented twice at the Greater Lynn headquarters, 564 Boston St., Lynn, MA: Sunday afternoon April 12, 2015, at 2 p.m. and Monday evening, April 13, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. The show will also be presented Friday evening at the 2015 NECCC Summer Conference in the Fine Arts Theater. iPhone-ography Registration Deadline in One Week (February 27, 2015)

Just a reminder that the registration deadline for the iPhone-ography lecture being presented by Jerry Hug is just one week away, February 27, 2015. The seminar fee if you register in advance is only $10. If you register after that date or at the door on March 4, 2015, the fee goes up by 50% to $15. Jerry Hug, from the Chicago area, is an expert on using your smart phone as a serious tool for photography. As Jerry points out your phone is the camera you always have with you.

Courtesy Enrollment for a CAP Member to Attend the 2015 NECCC Summer Conference

Every year NECCC allows each member club to select one member to attend the next NECCC Summer Conference with a free registration fee. CAP is a member of NECCC allowing us to select one of our members to receive this complementary registration fee. The important requirements to be selected are:

Greater Lynn International

As many CAP members know, the Greater Lynn Photographic Association hosts an international salon each spring. This year, its 38th, will be the last. All CAP members are urged to consider entering. The deadline has been extended to February 22, 2015.

If you decide to enter, be sure to select Connecticut Association of Photographers from the drop down shown below surrounded by red, not "individual."
This way CAP will be credited for your entry and will be in the competition for a club award. If you have already entered we are working with the Greater Lynn folks to get you credited to our club.

Reminder: iPhone-ography Seminar Coming Soon

Just a friendly reminder that now is the time to register for the iPhone-ography seminar planned for March 4, 2015. Even if you aren't using your phone for photography you owe it to yourself to come and learn about the possibilities. Jerry will show you how it is possible to do serious photography using just your phone, the camera you always have with you. The Speaker

Jerry Hug, APSA is an award winning photographer and a retired fine arts educator from the Maine Township High Schools in the Chicago Suburbs. He is the Public Relations Vice president for the Photographic Society of America serving 6000 members in the United States and 70 countries around the world. Jerry lectures about photography in the Chicago area and at photographic conventions throughout the country. Jane Sibley, FPSA, MNEC

It is our sad duty to inform you of the recent death of Jane Sibley, FPSA, MNEC, after a long illness (click for obituary). Jane was active for many years in the New Haven Camera Club, the Charter Oak Photographic Society (elected an Honorary Life Member in 2006), the Connecticut Chapter of PSA which became the Connecticut Association of Photographers, and the New England Camera Club Council.


Friends who want to remember Jane are invited to attend calling hours beginning at 9:00 a.m and a service that will begin at 10:00 a.m. on January 10, 2015, at the Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT 06518 (click for directions). A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at approximately 10:30. Interment will be at the Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Avenue, New Haven, CT  06515 (click for directions).

iPhone-ography Seminar Planned for March 4, 2015

The Connecticut Association of Photographers invites all interested photographers to attend a seminar on Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015, on the use of cell phones as cameras. The speaker will be Jerry Hug, APSA, from the Chicago area.

Jerry Hug, APSA is an award winning photographer and a retired fine arts educator from the Maine Township High Schools in the Chicago Suburbs. He is the Public Relations Vice president for the Photographic Society of America serving 6000 members in the United States and 70 countries around the world. Jerry lectures about photography in the Chicago area and at photographic conventions throughout the country. He is considered one of the go-to iPhone photography experts and is published in national journals.
